Apple Is About to Put Claude Inside Siri. Here Is Why That Changes Everything.
Something significant is happening this autumn. Apple is about to turn every iPhone into a gateway to the world''s most powerful AI models, and most business owners have not yet considered what that means for them.
According to reports ahead of Apple''s annual developer conference in June, iOS 27 will introduce a feature called Extensions. The system will allow iPhone users to choose which AI model powers their Apple Intelligence features, including Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. Models from Anthropic, including Claude, and Google, including Gemini, are expected to be among the options available from launch.
This is a meaningful departure from Apple''s historically closed approach to its own software. Rather than building everything in-house and controlling the entire experience, Apple is opening its platform to third-party AI and letting users decide which intelligence they want powering their device.
What Extensions Actually Mean
The Extensions system works by connecting third-party AI apps, already installed on your iPhone, to Apple''s native features. If you have the Claude app installed, you will be able to choose Claude as the model that powers your Siri conversations, your writing assistance, and more. The same applies to Gemini, and potentially other models as the system expands.
Apple is also reportedly adding the ability to assign different voices to different AI models. So a query handled by Apple''s own system might respond in one voice, while a response powered by Claude would use a different one, giving users a clear signal about which intelligence is actually responding.
This builds on the ChatGPT integration Apple introduced in iOS 18, which allowed Siri to fall back on ChatGPT for world knowledge queries. iOS 27 takes that concept significantly further, turning the choice of AI model into a user-level setting rather than a behind-the-scenes arrangement.
Why Business Owners Should Pay Attention
For most business owners, the immediate reaction might be to see this as a consumer story about smartphone features. It is worth looking at it differently.
The moment AI models like Claude become embedded in the operating system of the device that sits in the pocket of every one of your customers, every one of your staff members, and every one of your suppliers, the ambient presence of AI in daily business life increases dramatically.
This has a few practical implications worth thinking about now rather than in autumn.
First, the expectation of AI-powered responses is going to accelerate. Customers who are already used to asking Siri questions and getting intelligent answers will increasingly expect the same quality of response from the businesses they interact with. An AI chatbot that feels clunky or scripted will stand out as inadequate in a world where Claude-powered Siri feels natural and intelligent.
Second, AI tools are becoming easier to access for everyone in your team. A member of staff who previously had no experience with AI tools will soon have access to Claude-level intelligence through the device they already carry. Businesses that have trained their teams to use AI automation effectively will pull ahead of those that have not.
Third, the pace of change is not slowing. iOS 18 added ChatGPT. iOS 27 adds a full multi-model choice architecture. In two years the platform has gone from a single partnership to an open marketplace of intelligence. Wherever that trajectory leads in iOS 28 and beyond, it is not towards less AI integration.
The Window That Is Still Open
There is still a meaningful gap between businesses that are building AI into how they operate and businesses that are observing from the sidelines. That gap is closing, but it has not closed yet.
The businesses that move now, before AI capability becomes as ambient and expected as having a website or a working phone number, are the ones that will have genuinely differentiated operations rather than simply caught up with the baseline.
When Claude powers Siri on every iPhone in your customer''s pocket, the question will no longer be whether AI is relevant to your business. It will be whether your business is ready for a world where your customers are already using it.
